A local church aimed to empower students by providing over 100 backpacks to those in need before the start of the school year.
Southridge Community Church teamed up with Cenovus Cares on the initiative with help from Cenovus volunteer Jaclyn Bexson.
“Today we have a bouncy castle and some snacks for the community,” said Bexson in the church’s parking lot on Aug. 7.
“They can also come down and sign up for a backpack of school supplies.”
The church joins the initiative for the second year to give back.
The focus this year is on how people can access these supplies.
“Last year, we put everything on a table for people to pick from and they were so overwhelmed by the generosity they didn’t know what to pick,” stated Bexson.
“So, this year, we took the approach of people filling out a form, with a name, school, grade, and of course, favourite colour, because we want to get them a backpack they love.”
The goal is to provide 120 backpacks and as of 4 p.m. on Aug 7. 20 have been claimed.
“If we don’t have 120 people sign up, we will still fill all the backpacks. The last week before school, we’ll go to a couple of schools and find out if there is still a need,” said Bexson.
“We’ll fill those backpacks and use all the funds we’ve been given to make sure we bless as many kids as possible.”You can reach out to Southridge Community Church to sign up for a backpack before the last week of summer.
