Five days of heart-pounding action resulted in Logan Gorst winning his second CPCA championship in Lloydminster.
“It doesn’t matter where you start or the weekend you’ve had, you still gotta get it done.”
Those were the words of Gorst after winning his second Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) championship on Sunday afternoon at Halstead Downs.
Two dozen wagon teams converged on the border for five days of heats with packed grandstands at the Lloyd Ex each night.
Sunday’s dash for cash featured Gorst, Danny Ringuette, DJ King and Colby Stanley with Gorst taking the title with a clean run of 1:18.50.
“It feels awesome, but I owe it all to my horses, family and barn crew,” said Gorst of the championship.
“I keep saying it, but I’m not around all the time, and the crews are training them, feeding them, etc. I tip my hat to them because I’m not here without the friends and family I have.”
After the win, Gorst drove off in a brand new Nissan Pathfinder from the New Lloydminster Nissan.
Gorst got into the sport as an outrider at 15 and finds it ironic he’s now calling himself “one of the old guys” after almost 30 years in the game.
“It takes a really, really long time, they say 10 years, to get tough,” said Gorst.
“I was lucky enough to win a Calgary Stampede after 10 years, which I’m very happy about.”
“My dad taught me everything I know, I learned lots from Luke Tournier because I’m married to his daughter. You get taught, you listen, and good things happen.”
Championship unknowns
As for Sunday’s dash, Gorst knows how unpredictable wagon racing is and was thankful for a clean run.
“DJ King, he is running tough, he is legit. Kolby Stanley and Danny Ringuette, those are tough wagons and can compete with anybody,” said Gorst.
“I’ve been doing this quite a while and those guys run very well, very clean, and you’ll see them in the winner’s circle.”
“Danny’s already been there and you’ll see the other two there, it just takes time. You just have to keep knocking at the door.”
Gorst thanked the Lloyd Ex for hosting another great finals, the fans for their continued support, and said he can’t wait to be back again next year.
