Lakeland College students working with Canada’s first post-secondary commercial bison herd are set to benefit from state-of-the-art handling facilities.
A generous $150,000 donation from Ken Wasmuth is making the upgrade possible. This significant contribution was announced today at the Vermilion campus, marking a pivotal moment for the college's agricultural program.
In 2023, Lakeland College purchased eight contiguous quarter sections of land south of the Vermilion campus to house the bison. Animal science technology students manage the site. This is part of their learning at the Student-Managed Farm, Powered by New Holland.
However, while the land was previously used for bison ranching, the existing facilities needed improvements to implement the latest animal handling practices.
Wasmuth pledged his support after touring the facility in 2023-24. The enhancements include a hydraulic squeeze, new pens, gates, panels, and a weigh scale. Any remaining funds from Wasmuth’s gift will go towards fencing or grazing equipment to support the bison herd.
Wasmuth has a background in agriculture and a deep appreciation for the cultural significance of prairie beasts. Additionally, he felt compelled to support Lakeland’s bison enterprise. “I’m interested in bison and committed to helping Lakeland students,” he says. “This donation will provide the best tools for handling bison while minimizing stress on the animals.”
Wasmuth's support extends beyond just this project; in 2021, he established the Ken Wasmuth Agriculture Technology Award for students in the bachelor of agriculture technology program. A familiar face at Lakeland events, he emphasizes the importance of education, especially for students who may face challenges.
Dr. Alice Wainwright-Stewart, president and CEO of Lakeland, expressed gratitude for Wasmuth’s ongoing generosity. She noted that his investment in modernized facilities significantly enhances the hands-on learning experiences that define the college’s mission.
