The Alberta government is making an investment in an effort to support cancer patients and caregivers in rural and remote community.
They’ve invested $1.5 million over 15 month with the funding going to Wellspring Alberta, a community-based organization providing mental and emotional support to cancer survivors.
“Cancer affects many lives across the province, and this funding will help ensure Albertans have the support they need as they navigate their cancer journey,” said health minister Adriana LaGrange. “By collaborating with health partners, we are taking concrete steps to build a more sustainable and equitable health system for Albertans.”
The money will help Wellspring Alberta continue its current programs and explore expansion of its current services. Programs include counselling, peer support, and connecting caregivers with volunteers who understand the challenges of caring for someone with a diagnosis.
Meanwhile, Wellspring Alberta board chair Bill Gilliland said the funding will make a big difference, especially in rural areas.
“We are incredibly grateful to the Government of Alberta for this vital investment in the well-being of Albertans living with cancer,” said Gilliland. “This funding will allow Wellspring Alberta to expand and sustain our programs in rural and remote communities and ensure rural families can navigate their cancer journey with a community who gets it.”
Last year, Wellspring Alberta’s outreach manager, Rebecca Perkins, attended an event in Lloydminster promoting the program.
“We know that accessibility and availability of cancer support differ greatly across the province from community to community,” said Perkins. “We welcome anyone who is travelling for treatment, maybe from Lloydminster, to stop in our centres.”
Wellspring Alberta’s programs focus on helping patients cope with the physical and cognitive effects of cancer treatments. Additionally, they provide services through virtual platforms and in-person sessions, reducing the need for long-distance travel.
“Wellspring Alberta is a valued community partner offering accessible programming for people living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis,” said Brenda Hubley, chief program officer of Cancer Care Alberta. “We are very thankful for this investment that will allow Wellspring to expand its programming to support patients living with cancer in rural and remote areas, and their families.”
The investment aligns with Alberta Health Services’ ongoing efforts to refocus the health care system. However, by supporting programs like those offered by Wellspring, the government hopes to improve mental health, reduce hospitalizations, and ease pressure on emergency rooms.
“This support is invaluable to individuals and their families,” Gilliland added. “No one should go through cancer alone.”
Meanwhile, with this funding, Wellspring Alberta aims to ensure every Albertan affected by cancer can access the care and support they need, regardless of where they live.
