Emcon fined $180k for 2022 incident

Emcon Services Inc. plead guilty to failing to protect a worker under Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act.

A court sentenced the company on March 10, fining it $180,000, including a victim fine surcharge. Meanwhile, the Crown withdrew seven other charges.

The case involved an Aug. 15, 2022, incident in Acheson. A worker cleaning highway debris was hit and seriously injured by a vehicle.

Emcon maintains all provincial highways in the County of Vermilion River. This includes Highways 16, 17, 41, 45 and secondary highways.

Both the company and the Crown have 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalty.

Alberta’s OHS laws set workplace safety rules and protect workers. Serious injuries or death in a workplace may mean the company faces charges from OHS.
