Firefighters from across the County of Vermilion River (CVR) had the chance to hone their skills during an orientation course.
From Jan. 22 – 26, over a dozen firefighters and numerous instructors attended the firehall in Dewberry. Clandonald Captain Lyle Lawrence who is also an instructor at Lakeland College, shared over 25 years of experience with newer firefighters. He was joined by multiple other teachers with decades of experience in the fire service.
Firefighters from Paradise Valley, Kitscoty, Blackfoot, Marwayne, Islay, and Dewberry actively honed their skills through various exercises. They practiced securing water supplies, managing emergency scenes, and conducting search and rescue operations, enhancing safety in their local communities. The course also touched on radio procedures, how to stay safe and general operations on an emergency scene.

“We are fortunate here in the County to have such excellence fire instructors, many of which work, or have worked, at Lakeland College – Emergency Training Centre,” said County of Vermilion River Fire Chief Kirk Hughes. “This course is top notch and gives newer firefighters a familiarization with how to safely respond to incidents while hopefully perking their interest in more advanced training we offer.”
The departments answer hundreds of calls for service throughout CVR over a year. To volunteer, you can contact the county by e-mail.
