Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died while in RCMP custody on March 19.
St. Paul RCMP responded to a call about an unwanted person on March 18. Officers found an intoxicated man and arrested him. At 9:30 p.m., they placed him in a holding cell.

The next morning, at 10:25 a.m., officers discovered the man unresponsive. Life-saving measures conducted by police and paramedics failed. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now reviewing the case. Their investigation will focus on how officers handled the man’s custody and care.
ASIRT investigates all incidents involving Alberta police that result in serious injury, death, or allegations of misconduct. As this is an active investigation, no details will be provided going forward.
