After years of anger and frustration over downtown train delays, it appears there is a plan to bring a overpass over the rail lines. The project will ease congestion and improve travel times for residents.

The overpass will span the railway at 50 Ave., one of the city’s busiest crossings. The timeline for the project is quick, and if approved, construction will start this summer. The bridge will open in late 2027.

“Every day, people are stuck waiting for long freight trains,” stated an unnamed source. “This overpass will keep traffic moving and reduce frustration.”

Blocked crossings have also created struggles for emergency vehicles at times.

Public reaction

Meanwhile, the announcement has drawn both support and criticism from residents.

When approached, a local business owner welcomed the change.

“I’ve lost count of how many deliveries have been late because of the trains,” he said. “This overpass is long overdue.”

Additionally, Randy Marsh, former president of the Lloydminster Motor Club, believes the overpass will help preserve classic cars.

“Old engines overheat when they idle too long,” he said. “I’ve seen plenty of antique rides stall out while waiting for a train. An overpass will save cars and their owners a lot of trouble.”

Understandably, not everyone is on board. Long-time residents worry about the impact on local streets.

“Traffic is going to be worse as everyone will want to use the fast route,” stated one individual, kept anonymous for fear of backlash. “What about the noise? It’s going to change the whole feel of downtown.”

Meanwhile, the unnamed source stated interested parties will hold public consultations in the coming months to address concerns. Additionally, they are looking to fund it with a public, private partnership.

“We know change can be hard,” said the source. “But we want to build a better Lloydminster for everyone.”
