Coun. Kevin Martin, who is a training instructor with the fire department, spoke to the grant the town received.

“We’re always ongoing with training at the fire department and with our regional partners with the county,” he said.

The town applied for this grant the previous year and saw success in obtaining it.

“Last year, we had put into this grant as well and was lucky enough to receive funding for first aid, medical, first responder and stuff like that,” said Martin.

The grant will go towards helping get fire members necessary certifications.

“This one we put in as we have a lot of members for our level of service, to get our 1001 standard to our level 1 and level 2,” he said.

The actual functionality of the grant allows them to rent space to administer the training.

“It helps us rent the field at Lakeland College or another training facility house if we can’t book in times there,” said Martin.

He says it’s important to keep their members trained to the level of service required.

Vermilion will receive $25,400 to carry out the training from the 2025 Fire Services Training Program.
