The school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony near the end of the school year to mark the grand opening. Staff, families and supporters came together to celebrate.

“This started with the dream of our School Community Council (SCC),” said Glenda Kary with the Lloydminster Catholic School Division. “Parents sat down and looked at school goals. They focused on a wellness piece.”

St. Joseph’s principal, Nicole Blais, said the work took years.

“Our SCC’s been working for quite a few years to make this happen,” said Blais. “We’ve been working hard, fundraising and doing multiple things to raise enough money to put in a new playground.”

According to Kary, the group raised over $200,000 for the project. Volunteers from the school division and the City of Lloydminster also helped install the equipment.

“We had volunteers here for 10 days putting this in,” she said, noting some features make the playground feel special.

“There are some touches that are a little more St. Joe’s,” said Kary. “Some of the red colouring, the canoe, some of those other pieces.”

Students are already enjoying the space.

“The kids are loving it,” said Blais.

Kary also noted students enjoy the extra swings and more space.

“The additional swings has been fantastic,” she said. “I can see students are already experiencing this playground and loving how it’s spread out more.”

Blais thanked everyone who helped the project come to life.

“A huge thank you to everybody who has supported us,” she said.
