There’s a mountain of potatoes in need of a home at the Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre.
“Half of them are going to Onion Lake, the other half need to be gone by Thursday (July 17) as we have an event in the hall,” said Deborah Munroe, executive director at the native friendship centre, noting a partnership with Second Harvest.
“They called me last week and asked if I would accept a very large donation of potatoes.”

Second Harvest rescues surplus food across Canada to reduce waste and fight hunger. It collects fresh food and redirects it to local charities and non-profits that feed people in need.
After accepting the donation, Munroe immediately called Tigra-Lee Campbell from Lloydminster and Vermilion for Equity for help.
“You have to help me,” laughed Munroe, recalling the conversation.

For context, 18,000 pounds of potatoes is between 30,000 and 50,000 potatoes valued over $15,000.
For Campbell, she’s thankful for the donation and Munroe’s thoughtfulness.
“It’s going to help the community in such a big way. Those that are housed, those that are unhoused, I’m excited for this,” she said. “I’m really grateful to Deb because she brought us in on this.”
