At the Northeast zone tournament Monday (Sept. 15) in St. Paul, the Holy Rosary girls’ team of Haley Roach, Marielle Howe and sisters Kasey and Rhian Haughian won its division to gain provincial berths.

In their category, the Raiders’ boys placed second and didn’t qualify for provincials as a team, but two of those players did so on the individual front.

Holy Rosary teammates Logan Nelson and Austin Duguay shot a 77 and an 80, respectively, as they were the next top two finishers outside of the champion team from Fort McMurray.

Nelson is a Grade 10 freshman, while Duguay is a Grade 11 student.

On the girls’ side, the Raiders’ gold-medal-winning team is made up of three seniors — Howe, Roach and Kasey Haughian — and 10th grader Rhian Haughian.

The provincial championships are set for next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 22 and 23) at two Lethbridge-area courses, Magrath Golf and Country Club and Paradise Canyon Resort.

FOOTBALL: Raiders still unbeaten

Holy Rosary’s senior football team continues to run rampant on the road, winning for the third time in as many weeks to maintain its unbeaten season.

The Raiders, ranked atop the 3A category in Alberta high school football, went to Okotoks last Friday (Sept. 12) and shut out the Foothills Falcons 43-0.

“The team is off to a good start,” Holy Rosary coach Vince Orieux said this week. “There is lots of room for improvement in all three phases of the game, but we are happy with the progress the team is making.

“Our quarterback, JR Howdle, had a very good game last week in Okotoks. He was able to spread the ball around and keep the opposing team off balance. The offensive line is instrumental in the team’s success and they played well as a group last week. Running backs and receivers made plays when called upon. Overall, it was a good team effort.”

The Raiders are two-time reigning provincial champions in the 3A category, which is for schools with an enrollment of under 800 students.

In Week 4 action, Holy Rosary heads to Edmonton’s Jasper Place Bowl this Saturday at 4 p.m. to face the St. Joseph’s Celtics from Grande Prairie.
