The National Association of Federal Retirees (NAFR) was in Lloydminster on National Seniors Day to hold an open meeting discussing various senior’s issues.

The Battle River branch of the National Association of Federal Retirees held the advocacy and information meeting on Oct. 1 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Lloydminster.

The afternoon event was part of a larger, regional outreach effort that began last year.

“What we’re here to do is to listen,” said Paul Loewen, Battle River NAFR president.

Organizers say they heard directly from residents and shared information on retirement issues.

Loewen said the meeting was intended to serve both members and the broader public.

NAFR has traditionally focused on representing retired federal employees but has broadened advocacy to include all seniors.

In addition to informing people about membership criteria, meetings also highlight resources such as planning guides, access to service officers, and information on benefits, including travel insurance.

At previous events, issues discussed ranged from pensions and health care to support networks for families dealing with dementia or end-of-life planning. Loewen noted those conversations often move beyond federal jurisdiction, touching on provincial or community-based concerns.

The Lloydminster meeting was open to the public with anyone interested in retirement planning, seniors’ issues or advocacy could attend.
