Some speed reductions along stretches of Lloydminster roadways could be on their way.

Administration recommended the speed zone changes at the Oct. 20 Governance and Priorities Committee meeting.

A reduction from 80 km/h to 60 km/h is being proposed on 12 St., 600M west of 50 Ave. to 300M west of 75 Ave. Then along 75 Ave. from south city limits to 150M south of 29 St., a reduction from 80 km/h to 60 km/h is being proposed.

“I will note that the changing traffic trends that our team has witnessed has been along 12 St. where we’re seeing an increase (in) usage along 59 Ave. and 61 Ave., with residents using that as a thoroughfare into their communities,” said Andrew DeGruchy, director of public safety. “That increased traffic has really warranted the reduction in the speed zones in that area.”

The traffic bylaw is expected to be reviewed in the next year.

“A more comprehensive review of the traffic bylaw is scheduled to occur throughout 2025 and extend into the spring of 2026,” said DeGruchy. “Which these speed zone changes would’ve been captured under however, administration felt we could change these speed zones in a timelier manner.”

Coun. Michael Diachuk asked if there’s been consideration in adding lights at 75 Ave. and 12 St.

“Around 4 o’clock if you’re trying to go south off of 12 St. to turn right or left it’s virtually impossible in that area,” he said.

Administration confirmed traffic data is being reviewed and administration is looking at future growth to determine when traffic signals need to be put in.

Amendments to the traffic bylaw will take three readings before being passed. The item is expected to return to council.
