Following three rounds of voting and more than 240,000 votes cast, the province’s new plate will feature the Moraine Lake in Banff National Park and will hit the roads in mid-2026.
Premier Danielle Smith celebrated the announcement, highlighting the plate’s significance.
“Albertans know who we are and what we stand for: we are strong, free, resilient and united by the natural beauty that defines our home. Moraine Lake is recognized around the world, and the fact that Albertans chose it makes this new plate deeply meaningful,” Smith said.

The new licence plate features Alberta’s “Strong and Free” motto, which is also a nod to Canada’s national anthem.
Moraine Lake, one of Alberta’s most iconic destinations, provides a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains, which draw visitors from around the world.
Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally said the design will be a source of pride for all Albertans.
“Having the iconic Moraine Lake on our licence plates is something we can all be proud to show off. Because of Albertans’ votes, the beauty and strong and free spirit of our province will be on display for motorists across the country,” he said.
When the new plate is released, Albertans can voluntarily replace their current plate for a $28 fee or receive one at no additional cost during their vehicle registration renewal. Drivers may also continue using their existing plates if they remain in good condition.
