Since 2023, the Agricultural Societies Infrastructure Revitalization Program has provided $7.5 million in grants to support 106 projects, helping societies improve commercial kitchens, roofs, horse riding arenas, ice rink heating and ventilation and accessibility and energy efficiency in their facilities.

“These buildings are central hubs for our villages, towns and rural communities,” said RJ Sigurdson, minister of agriculture and irrigation.

“They host weddings, graduations, children’s programs, sports and summer rodeos. This program ensures ag societies can continue to expand and modernize their facilities, keeping them safe and welcoming for everyone.”

Agricultural societies can apply for funding between $10,000 and $100,000 to repair or upgrade aging infrastructure.

Russ Kushinski, director of the Calmar and District Agricultural Society, said the program enabled major improvements to their facilities.

“We installed a high-efficiency boiler system, improved air-flow, and replaced flooring in our kitchen. Our modern facility and curling rink now attract neighbouring communities,” Kushinski said.

The initiative highlights Alberta’s ongoing effort to strengthen community engagement and support economic growth in rural areas.
