Over the past few weeks, officers have responded to multiple reports of suspected fake bills being used in the city, with similar cases also reported in the Edmonton area.

In these incidents, individuals attempted to use counterfeit banknotes for purchases at local businesses. Investigators say some of the counterfeit currency appears to be of higher quality, making it more difficult for staff to detect without careful inspection.

Police are advising businesses to take precautions, including:

  • Carefully inspecting all denominations, especially higher-value bills, noting that each has a unique serial number.
  • Familiarizing themselves with Canadian banknote security features, such as raised ink, transparent windows and holographic elements.
  • Refusing suspicious transactions and contacting police rather than putting themselves at risk.
  • Retaining surveillance footage and noting descriptions of individuals involved, if it is safe to do so.

The Lloydminster RCMP are collaborating with other RCMP detachments and financial institutions as part of the ongoing investigation.

“Counterfeit currency directly impacts local businesses and our community’s economy,” said Sgt. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP. “We are asking business owners and staff to stay alert and take a moment to verify bills during transactions. Your attentiveness helps us identify suspects and prevents further losses.”

Anyone who believes they have received counterfeit currency, or has information about these incidents, is asked to contact Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400. To remain anonymous, tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com, or through the P3 Tips app for Apple or Android devices. For non-emergency RCMP matters within Alberta, call 310-RCMP (7267). The Alberta RCMP app also provides online reporting and access to RCMP news and information.
