The Virtual Access to Addiction Medicine (VAAM) program is launching in Lloydminster, Nipawin, Cumberland House — Cree Nation and Northern Village, and at all provincial detox and treatment centres. It is the first program of its kind in Saskatchewan.

Minister Lori Carr said the program will improve timely addiction care, particularly for residents in rural and remote areas.

“This virtual program is a new and innovative way to offer Saskatchewan residents timely, life-saving addiction treatment,” Carr said in a statement.

The program provides intake, assessment and treatment through videoconferencing or telephone, working alongside existing local supports. Supports include lab testing, outpatient counselling and pharmacists for medication administration.

VAAM is designed to help reduce substance use and dependence, prevent overdoses and save lives. Substances addressed through the program include opioids, stimulants, alcohol and benzodiazepines.

Zoe Teed McKay, executive director of provincial services for mental health and addictions with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, said the program expands treatment options regardless of where people live.

“Having the option to access addiction treatment virtually will provide more opportunities for individuals to receive the treatment they need and help them on the road to recovery,” she said.

Saskatchewan residents aged 18 and older in the three participating communities can self-refer or be referred by a care provider. Services are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

The province said the program will expand to more communities in the coming months, with updates on the SHA website.
