Battlefords RCMP say officers received a report at about 9:30 p.m. that shots had been fired at a residential building in the city. Police responded immediately and confirmed no one was injured. Investigators determined the suspects fled in a grey SUV.

RCMP located a vehicle matching the description travelling on Highway 16. Officers attempted to stop the SUV, but it continued at a high rate of speed before turning onto a rural road and coming to a sudden stop.

RCMP officers, with assistance from Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services, contained the vehicle. Police say one suspect briefly exited the SUV, threw a firearm to the ground and re-entered the vehicle.

After repeated commands, two men exited the vehicle and were arrested without incident. Officers seized a loaded firearm from the scene. A subsequent search of the vehicle also uncovered ammunition and bear spray.

Monty Bear, 32, of Little Pine First Nation, is charged with:

  • discharging a firearm while being reckless;
  • flight from police;
  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle;
  • possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition without a licence or registration;
  • possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;
  • operation while prohibited;
  • two counts of failing to comply with a probation order;
  • possession of a weapon contrary to an order;
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and
  • operation of a motor vehicle while impaired.

Blake Kasokeo, 29, of Poundmaker First Nation, is charged with:

  • discharging a firearm while being reckless;
  • possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm with ammunition without a licence or registration;
  • possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle;

Bear and Kasokeo both made their first appearances in North Battleford provincial court on Feb. 10.
