The scorching May sun might have heated up the pavement, but it also set the perfect stage for Lloydminster residents to come together for a good cause — and a great burger.
Border Paws animal Shelter hosted the fundraiser May 28 offering burgers and a pop for just $5.
“Swift-Net approached us and asked if we wanted to do a barbecue,” said Chelsea Reeves, funding and event co-ordinator with the shelter, noting the burgers were donated by TGP Lloydminster Cash and Carry.
“Then, Willcraft Technologies Ltd. jumped in and sponsored The Scoop Lloydminster to supply ice cream.”
Reeves said through the combined efforts of their barbecue partners, all of the proceeds raised went to support shelter animals.
“Any funds that we can make, 100 per cent go toward the animals. That’s amazing,” she said.

The dogs had the chance to be outside for brief periods as the scorching Lloydminster sun heated the parking lot. People attending the barbecue also had the chance to meet the animals inside.
“Even if you’re not looking for a cat or a dog, you might meet a cat or a dog and you might know somebody who’s a good fit for them,” said Reeves. “Or, you might say, ‘I do need this cat or dog.'”
Next up for the shelter will be their bottle drive this weekend.
“It’s going to be Sunday (May 31) at Canadian Tire from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” she said. “Any extra funds that we can make around this time of year, it’s so important.”
The shelter also accepts bottle donations outside of the drive.
“Whenever somebody wants to drop off bottles, we will happily take them,” she said.
Past that, the busy summer continues for Border Paws.
“We’re going to be doing an adoption event at Pet Valu in Vermilion on June 5,” said Reeves.
The shelter has seen growing success in getting animals adopted.
“We’ve had so many adoptions compared to last year. It’s incredible,” she said. “It’s such a good feeling seeing so many animals find their homes where they’re supposed to be.”
