Saskatchewan RCMP received a report on March 12 regarding funds intended for the First Nation community. An investigation by the RCMP’s Central District General Investigation Section and the local Onion Lake detachment found that over a four-year period, two men allegedly requested and unlawfully received payments from landholders in the area.
Tommy Whitstone, 67, and Richard Stanley, 54, both of Onion Lake, have each been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.
Both men are scheduled to make their first court appearance in Onion Lake on Nov. 25.
Police typically do not name victims, but investigators are making details public to prevent further instances and encourage potential victims to come forward.
Anyone who suspects they had suspicious or fraudulent interactions with either individual is asked to contact police at 310-RCMP or submit an anonymous tip through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
