A liquid asphalt spill on 52 St. has left Lloydminster drivers finding alternative routes to work.
Cleanup and remediation work will continue into mid-August, according to the City of Lloydminster.
The roadway has been closed since the spill while crews worked to mitigate environmental damages and remove contaminated material from the site.
Multiple attempts at cleaning the roadway and curb systems have been partially effective, requiring the replacement of the impacted infrastructure.
“Throughout this response, the focus has been protecting the environment and infrastructure, and ensuring the site is restored to pre-incident condition. We appreciate the hard work being conducted on-site and recognize a cleanup of this complexity takes time,” said City of Lloydminster's Manager of Emergency Management Andrew DeGruchy.
According to DeGruchy, the next step will be to replace affect infrastructure.
The millwork will take approximately 25 days to complete. There will require intermittent lane restrictions on 52 St. throughout the work period.
All work related to the cleanup and remediation is funded by those responsible for the incident, not the municipality.
A detour route has been established and traffic signage is in place. Motorists are advised to plan alternate traffic routes until further notice.
