Over 55,000 postal workers in Canada began a nationwide strike today. Represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), they demand better wages, safer working conditions, and expanded public services.
“A strike is a last resort,” CUPW said. “Canada Post left us no choice when it threatened to change our working conditions and leave our members exposed to layoffs.”
Canada Post expressed disappointment, saying the strike would cause “immediate and significant” disruptions. It warned millions of Canadians, including small businesses and charities, would feel the impact during the busy holiday season.
The union cited unresolved issues after a year of bargaining.
“Our demands are reasonable: fair wages, safe working conditions, and the right to retire with dignity,” said CUPW. “Postal workers are proud to serve their communities and want to do the job they love.”
Canada Post highlighted its offer, including an 11.5 per cent wage increase over four years, paid leave, and job security.
“We’ve put forward proposals that protect and enhance what’s important to employees,” the company said.
Canada Post also stressed the need for seven-day-a-week parcel delivery.
“These changes are essential to secure our future and grow our parcel business,” they noted.
Meanwhile, services have come to a halt.
“Mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered during the strike,” Canada Post confirmed.
Both sides expressed willingness to negotiate.
“We believe we can achieve negotiated collective agreements,” CUPW said, while Canada Post urged the union to return to the table.
Canadians now await progress as postal services remain shuttered.
