Families can enjoy free fishing in Saskatchewan this Family Day weekend. No angling licence is needed from Feb. 15 to 17.
The free fishing weekend applies to all provincial waters open to sportfishing. Regular rules still apply, including possession limits. Anglers taking fish out of the province must have a valid Saskatchewan licence.
This means, if you live on the Alberta side of Lloyd and catch fish to eat in Saskatchewan, you still need a valid Saskatchewan license.
“In Saskatchewan, we are blessed to have some of the best sportfishing anywhere, right here in our backyard,” said environment minister Travis Keisig. “Free fishing weekend is a great opportunity to discover – or rediscover – our beautiful province and the fun of angling with friends and family.”
Anglers should follow safety guidelines before heading onto the ice. The Winter Ice Safety Fact Sheet offers tips on checking ice thickness.
Some lakes have specific rules. Anglers should review the Saskatchewan Anglers Guide before heading out.
To prevent the spread of invasive species, always clean, drain, and dry any gear you plan to use. Additionally, anglers must remove all garbage from the ice.

free fishing weekend is from Feb 15- Feb 17th. I’d hate to see somebody get charged for angling without a licence, because they read this article and took its information at face value.
