Young trades and technology students will compete at Lakeland College on Feb. 28 in a regional Skills Canada Alberta event.
Students from nine high schools will test their abilities in baking, welding, video production, and more.
“The competition includes the following skills: automobile technology, baking, cabinet making, carpentry, culinary arts, electrical installations, hair intermediate, hair junior, video production and welding,” said David King, dean of trades and technology at Lakeland College.
Meanwhile, the event allows students to challenge their peers in a competitive setting.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to be in that competitive atmosphere for their skills and to compete as a team against other high schools in the Lakeland region,” said King.
Winners will move on to the provincial competition in Edmonton from May 6 to 8.
According to King, Lakeland College values hosting events like this to highlight skilled trades and introduce students to its facilities.
“We also love to promote our region’s talented youth and allow them the opportunity to showcase their skills locally,” King said. “We are proud to host this event, which is one of nine throughout the province.”
A total of 66 students will compete in the regional event. It kicks off a series of nine competitions across Alberta.
Skills Canada Alberta aims to inspire students to consider careers in trades and technology. Furthermore, the organization also works to improve public perceptions of these fields and strengthen connections between industry, education, and government.
The competition starts at 7 a.m. for bakers and wraps up at 3:30 p.m., with a closing ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Most competitions will be held at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus. However, the hairstyling event will be in Lloydminster.
