Canada is warning travellers about new risks, including enhanced scrutiny, at the U.S. border.

Global Affairs Canada (GAF) updated its travel advisory on April 4. However, it says Canadians may face tough questions from U.S. border agents.

“Individual border agents often have significant discretion in making those determinations,” read the advisory. “Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices. Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities.”

Border guards can also search you and check phones and laptops before allowing entry.

GAF advises people to be honest with U.S. officials. Additionally, if you are denied entry, guards can detain you before sending you back to Canada.

Officials say people must meet all entry rules or risk detention. Although the risk level for travel to the United States is still green, the government wants travellers to stay informed and follow all laws.
