Speeding season: RCMP issue warning

As temperatures rise and roads clear this spring, Alberta RCMP are warning drivers about the dangers of speeding.

Even in good conditions, driving too fast increases the risk of crashes and serious injuries.

“Speeding is one of the biggest threats to traffic safety, and unfortunately, it’s a common traffic violation among drivers,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic, noting speeding remains a widespread issue. “Stay safe this ‘speeding season’ by respecting the posted speed limit, even when you’re in a hurry.”

Last year, Alberta RCMP issued 48,600 speeding tickets. In April alone, officers handed out 4,283 speeding violations. Police also laid 9,419 charges for aggressive and dangerous driving.

According to Alberta Transportation, one in four fatal crashes involve unsafe speeds. More than half of these collisions happen in rural areas. Transport Canada reports speeding is a factor in 27 per cent of road fatalities and 19 per cent of serious injuries.

To reduce the risk, drivers should leave early to allow extra time to reach their destinations. Alberta RCMP urge motorists to follow posted speed limits, especially in school, playground, and construction zones where pedestrian traffic is high.

Speeding doesn’t just mean exceeding the legal limit. It also includes driving too fast for weather, road, or traffic conditions. Slowing down allows drivers to react quickly to sudden hazards.

Passengers also have a role to play. If a driver is speeding, Alberta RCMP encourage passengers to speak up and insist on safe driving habits.

RCMP will continue to target speeding and aggressive driving throughout the season. Motorists are reminded that slowing down can prevent collisions, reduce injuries, and save lives.
