Alberta RCMP officers participated in a national effort to promote safe driving from Dec. 1 to Dec. 7. National Safe Driving Week included National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day on Dec. 7, when officers worked to stop impaired drivers.
During the week, the force issued 1,933 tickets, 642 speeding tickets, and 18 for distracted driving. Meanwhile, a police officer caught one driver speeding at 80 km/h over the limit.
Police also issued 159 Immediate Roadside Sanctions for impaired driving during the week. On Dec. 7 alone, 54 impaired drivers were taken off the roads. Additionally, officers worked with other agencies, using check stops to conduct mandatory alcohol screenings.
“December is a time for celebration,” said Sgt. Darin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Many Albertans will be traveling across the province to see their friends and families. No matter what your holiday plans are, always be mindful of traffic safety. Saving a few minutes is not worth the risk.”
Alberta RCMP are reminding drivers that traffic is a shared responsibility and to never drive while under the influence.
