“Your health is your own,” she said to club members on July 14.

It’s a simple message. One she learned working in the healthcare industry for more than 35 years.

“You have to be proactive about your own health and not rely on other people to look after it for you,” said Schellenberg, noting most people wait until they’re sick to see a doctor.

“This is not healthcare, this is sick care.”

According to Schellenberg, studies show for every dollar spent on prevention, up to $30 can be saved down the road.

Her tips were straightforward and included drinking more water, getting enough sleep, moving your body daily and spending time outside.

“It doesn’t have to be complex changes and they don’t have to cost you a lot of money,” she said. “They can be free, like standing outside in the sunshine in the grass.”

Schellenberg also said the six things needed for a healthy life are sleep, hydration, nutrition, movement, stress management, and gratitude. She called them “legs on a table.”

“If you dump one of the legs off of the table … it starts to become wobbly,” she said. “If we look after those six pillars, you aren’t gonna need the medical system nearly as much.”
