The Alberta government is investing up to $49 million in 18 new clean-tech and recycling projects to grow its circular economy.

Officials say funding comes from the Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) program. They also anticipate the projects will create nearly 1,600 jobs and bring $233 million into Alberta’s economy.

“Manufacturing is a pillar of our economy, employing tens of thousands of Albertans and solving real-world challenges,” said Rebecca Schulz, Alberta’s minister of environment and protected areas.

“This funding will help manufacturers do more with the resources we already have,” she said. “It will produce the goods Albertans rely on while strengthening the province’s global competitiveness, creating more jobs and protecting the environment.”

ERA funds projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while growing Alberta’s economy.

“By investing in advanced materials and circular economy solutions, we’re helping Alberta’s industries stay competitive,” said ERA CEO Justin Riemer. “This funding supports technologies that make better use of our resources while cutting costs. It’s a win for the economy and the environment.”

The funded projects include:

  • A new recycling system for agricultural plastics.
  • A facility to turn wood waste from demolition into building materials.
  • A pilot plant that transforms food and yard waste into clean fibres.
  • A project that makes battery materials from carbon waste.

Projects are located across Alberta, including Calgary, Nisku and rural areas.
