Three Lloydminster Rotarians say attending the Rotary International Conference in Calgary was eye-opening, inspiring and deeply rewarding.

Michelle Benning, a Rotary member since 1999, called it a first-time experience unlike any other.

“I’ve never been to an international conference,” said Benning. “Actually, I’ve never been to a conference with, I don’t know, 15,000, 17,000 people.”

The event ran in late June at the BMO Centre and included sessions at the Saddledome. Benning described the scale as “mind-blowing.”

One highlight was a Saturday showcase event at GMC Place.

“It was about six degrees in there and we froze our little tootsies off. But it was a fantastic show,” she said.

Robbie Kaschl recalled meeting a South African Rotarian who was once a Ugandan refugee.

“It shows you how small the world is when a lady from the other side of the country has a wonderful story,” Kaschl said.

Kaschl admitted he once avoided Rotary’s diversity, equity and inclusion discussions but changed his view after attending a session.

“It’s making sure there are no barriers, allowing anyone to come through the program.”

Wendy Plandowski said the support of other clubs stood out.

“The Vermilion Club had an entourage there. They made us feel so welcome,” she said, adding the Lloydminster club was fortunate to have Pat Skinner, who organizes weekly meals, manages the meeting space and keeps operations running smoothly.

“So many clubs don’t have a Pat,” said Plandowski. “I feel like that’s the reason we are so successful as a club.”
