The Parkinson’s Association of Alberta hosted its annual Step ‘n Stride fundraiser in Lloydminster on Sept. 7 at Bud Miller All Seasons Park.

“Today’s all about awareness and celebrating our Parkinson’s community,” said communications manager Lance Corbett. “Not just in Lloydminster but around Alberta and even in Northwest Territories.”

The event is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, taking place in eight communities across Alberta. Last year, it raised more than $400,000.

“We’re trending towards that again this year,” Corbett said. “This fundraiser accounts for almost 30 per cent of our annual operating budget.”

This year marked the first time the event launched on a Sunday. Corbett stated it was due to logistics for this event. He noted, multiple other Step’n’Stride events launched across the province over the same weekend.

Corbett emphasized that money raised in Lloydminster stays in the community.

“It remains here to help with supports, programs, resources, one-on-ones,” he said.

Most attendees have some affiliation with the association throughout the year, according to Corbett.

“The people who aren’t involved may come as family members or friends,” he said. “I really hope they get an understanding of how strong and resilient the Parkinson’s community is.”

Corbett was thankful for all the support the event received.

“They support us throughout the year and know how important an event like this is,” he said.
