Police say they recently received a report from an individual who answered a call from a number that appeared to belong to a Saskatchewan RCMP detachment. During the call, the person posing as an officer instructed the individual to go to a local gas station and withdraw cash from an ATM.

The caller also told the individual not to attend any RCMP detachment, claiming they would be arrested if they did.

Mounties say scammers can manipulate caller ID to display legitimate phone numbers, making the calls appear to come from official RCMP sources.

Police stress the RCMP will never request money or threaten arrest for making a report to police. The public is encouraged to verify detachment phone numbers by using those listed on the Saskatchewan RCMP website.

If you receive a suspicious phone call or text message, police advise residents to hang up immediately, avoid sharing personal information, not trust caller ID alone and never send or withdraw money at someone’s request. They also advise people not to engage with automated prompts.

Anyone who receives a similar scam call or text is encouraged to report it to their local RCMP detachment by calling 310-RCMP and to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Information can also be submitted anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at saskcrimestoppers.com.
