Cold Lake First Nations Casino Corporation, operating as Casino Dene, pleaded guilty on March 19 to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code. The conviction stems from the company’s failure to eliminate or control a hazard that had been previously identified in a hazard assessment.

The charges follow an investigation into an accident on Sept. 22, 2023. According to court details, a worker at the casino was struck and pinned by falling lockers.

In addition to the $70,000 fine (which includes a victim fine surcharge), the Cold Lake Court of Justice placed the corporation on two years of enhanced regulatory supervision.

This order mandates the company complete specific action items designed to improve its corporate health and safety systems
