For the Border City Rotary Club, it serves as a chance to raise money to give back to initiatives they support.
“Because we’re not a large club, we focus on some very specific programs that are near and dear to us,” said Darrel Dunn, Border City Rotary Club president. “RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) and RYLE (Rotary Youth Leadership Experience), it’s a combination of learning about public service, civil service, engagement in what it’s like to be a citizen and relate to government and around government.”
He says the two programs are for a wide range of age groups.
“One of the programs is for the younger kids, the other program is for the more senior kids,” he said.
The club, which meets Tuesdays at 7 a.m. at The Diner, has been growing.
“I think we’ve got 12 in our club, it’s not a big club, 12 or 13 (members),” said Dunn. “Over the last two or three years, we’ve had five new members.
“So, (we’re) continually looking for additional members.”
He says it’s an interesting group of people.
“Our meetings are pretty informal. There’s a lot of talking and a lot of laughter,” he said, noting guests speak at the meetings nearly every week.
“We generally have, five out of six weeks, we have guest speakers come in and cover a wide range of topics and interests,” said Dunn.
Anybody interested in joining the group can attend a meeting or check out their Facebook page at Border City Rotary Club Lloydminster.
