Alberta RCMP issued more than 1,100 traffic tickets over the Heritage Day long weekend as part of a provincewide enforcement campaign.

Between July 31 and Aug. 3, Mounties conducted enhanced traffic safety checks across Alberta, handing out 1,107 tickets in total.
Speeding accounted for nearly half of the violations, with officers issuing 513 speeding tickets. Police also ticketed 27 drivers for distracted driving and 20 for seatbelt infractions.
In addition to the tickets, officers removed 90 impaired drivers from provincial roads.
Under Alberta’s Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) program, police issued:
- 59 IRS Fails
- 14 IRS Warns
- 13 24-hour suspensions
- four IRS Zero sanctions to novice or commercial drivers
Despite the increased police presence, officers responded to 28 injury collisions and five fatal crashes over the four-day period.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services said in a statement. “We all have a role to play in keeping Alberta’s roads safe.”
Turnbull reminded motorists that simple choices — such as driving sober, staying focused behind the wheel, adapting to weather conditions and wearing seatbelts — can save lives.
