The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce says it supports Canada’s firm stance in recent trade negotiations with the United States, despite warning that new U.S. tariffs will have a “devastating” impact on some local sectors.

The statement follows the breakdown of Aug. 21 cross-border trade talks after Canadian officials rejected what they characterized as unfair and uneconomic American demands.
While acknowledging the hardship ahead for businesses and workers, the Chamber agreed with federal and provincial decisions not to accept terms that would compromise Canadian economic sovereignty or the ability to negotiate trade deals independently.
“As an export-driven province, our prosperity depends on access to markets around the world,” the Chamber said, calling on both levels of government to deliver robust financial support to affected industries.
The business advocacy group representing over 10,000 businesses said it will focus on pushing for broader global trade partnerships and reducing trade barriers between Canadian provinces.
