SIRT received notification from the Regina Police Service on July 18, 2025, at about 10:30 a.m. regarding an officer-involved shooting that had just occurred in Regina, the provincial government announced.

SIRT’s civilian executive director accepted the notification as falling within the team’s mandate and directed an investigation.

The investigation has now been completed, just over a year after the incident. The Civilian Executive Director’s public report is available online through the provincial government’s publications portal.

SIRT’s mandate is to independently investigate incidents where an individual has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on or off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police. The team also investigates similar incidents involving RCMP officers operating in Saskatchewan.

The team also handles allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.

Details about the specific circumstances of the July 2025 shooting were not included in this week’s announcement. The Regina Police Service provided the initial notification to SIRT as required under Saskatchewan protocols for police oversight investigations.

SIRT operates independently of police services to ensure accountability and transparency in investigations involving law enforcement officers.
