Staff Sgt. Jerry Nutbrown outlined how the specialized units are working to curb property crimes, shoplifting and repeat offences while delivering proactive community policing across the border city.
Currently staffed by 11 regular members and one municipal employee, the joint team is divided into two focused sections designed to tackle specific safety challenges in the community.
The General Investigation Section addresses serious, time-sensitive crimes, leveraging local knowledge of habitual offenders and key players to build stronger cases with Crown prosecutors and probation services.
Meanwhile, the CRU targets immediate local crime trends, running focused enforcement campaigns and partnering with local businesses and residents to mitigate anti-social behaviour and commercial theft.
City officials noted that the unit’s proactive, targeted approach aligns directly with the municipality’s strategic priorities on community safety and well-being.
