The Alberta RCMP major crimes unit confirmed the victim as 22-year-old Birinder Singh. Police say Singh was killed in a shooting that occurred March 14 on Highway 2 south of Leduc.
As a result of the investigation, officers arrested 18-year-old Jimmy Gassner on March 21 in Canoe Lake.
Gassner, who police say is a resident of Lloydminster, has been charged with second-degree murder. He has been remanded into custody and is being transported to Alberta. A future court date has not yet been set.
“Despite the laying of these charges, we know that there will be many questions regarding suspects and motivations,” said Staff Sgt. John Brown.
“Please understand that our ability to answer these questions is limited while our officers continue their important work,” Brown added.
RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
