Police committee now open to applications

The City of Lloydminster is officially looking for residents to join its new Municipal Policing Committee. The committee will help connect the community with local police.

During the Feb. 10 Governance and Priorities Committee meeting, administration was asked how members would be selected.

“We’re looking to council to provide some potential nominees as well as working through administration around known community members we think would serve this community well,” said said Andrew DeGruchy senior manager, public safety.

The city created the committee after changes to the Alberta Police Act. It aims to improve public safety and support RCMP efforts. The committee is now open to residents, too.

Volunteers will help oversee the city’s policing agreement with the RCMP. They will also share community concerns with the detachment commander.

Members will help set policing priorities and create a Community Safety Plan. The plan will encourage local groups to work together.

The committee must report to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services each year.

Members will attend four to eight one-to-two hour meetings per year. Committee appointments last for two years.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and live in Lloydminster. They must also pass a security check.

The deadline to apply is March 24 at 11:59 p.m.

Residents can apply online at Lloydminster.ca/Police or pick up a paper application at City Hall.

City Council will choose the committee members at a future meeting.
