Kastendieck: Fred Kastendieck passed away on December 6, 2024, after a long fulfilling adventurous life at the age of 92 years. Ernest Manfred Kastendieck was born to Eckhard and Elizabeth Kastendieck in the Meadow Dew District, Saskatchewan (or Deer Creek District), he was the second of six children. Right till Fred’s last days he could take you and show you where the Kastendieck Homestead was where he was born and raised. When Fred was 14 years old, the family moved to the Hillmond District. Fred was always a hard worker from being a young Saskatchewan Farm boy in the early years he had to help out at home and help the neighbors. Fred would train horses to pull wagons and equipment to make money for himself. After grade 8, he knew he wanted to make money and headed to northern Alberta, he apprenticed at Peace River Motors then became a truck driver eventually owning plenty of his own trucks and equipment. He even was apart of the first camp in Red Earth Creek before Red Earth became what it is today. Fred was Trucker of the Week in the Peace Region at one point. He was always busy and ambitious, hauling anything he could from the Peace area to the Northwest Territories. Fred became a family man, raising six children, Jeff, Micheal, Faye “Suzie”, Norlee, Peter and Barry. In the early 70s Fred moved his family to Hillmond to his parents’ farm where, up to his passing, he still lived, working hard and raising cattle 53 years later. Even though he worked hard he had many good times and adventures; Fred enjoyed camping, fishing, river boating, traveling and good company. Fred was a great storyteller giving him something to always talk about. If you sat with Fred, you would know and he would never forget you, Fred was always willing to help anyone who needed a hand and believed in being a good neighbour. Fred was survived by his children, Mike (Tara), Norlee (Bill), Peter, and Barry (Rhonda); step-daughters, Karen (Daryl) and Cindy (Rick); sisters, Irma and Irene (John); brother-in-law, Bobby; 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was pre-deceased by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Suzie; parents, Eckhart & Elizabeth Kastendieck; brothers, Herman (Rosette) and Gerhart (Uta); sister, Betty and brother-in-law Leo. There will be a Celebration of Life for Fred at the Hillmond Memorial Hall on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11:00 am, with a luncheon to follow.
