Spiro’s Family Restaurant in Lloydminster opened early on Sept. 7 to raise money and awareness for the Terry Fox Foundation.

The local favourite hosted a by-donation pancake breakfast ahead of the Border City’s annual Terry Fox Run, which is being held at the Kinsmen Participark at 56 Ave. and 30 St. on Sept. 14.

For owner Spiro Kokonas, giving back is part of what it means to be part of a community.
“We depend on each other,” he said while greeting guests. “We develop a friendship this way and that is what God wants us to be, a friendship society, to love one another.”
Attendees caught up with friends over breakfast while learning about Fox’s dream.
Heather Price, one of the local organizers, said the event shows how Lloydminster continues to rally behind the cause.
“It is absolutely fantastic,” she said. “It’s so heartwarming to have that kind of support from amazing people in our community willing to give so much.”
Registration for this year’s Terry Fox Run opens at 9 a.m. and the run starts at 10 a.m. Participants of all abilities are encouraged to sign up and strollers, wheelchairs, bikes and rollerblades are welcome. There is no fundraising minimum
According to Price, every dollar matters as Fox envisioned every Canadian contributing one dollar to cancer research.
