Column: Why does fall always feels too short?

A Meridian Source columnist reflects on how quickly fall seems to slip by in the Lloydminster area, and why it’s worth slowing down to enjoy it before winter arrives.

Chels and I have been joking recently that fall seems to get shorter every year.

Maybe it’s because we spend so much time waiting for it to arrive. We get through summer, start looking forward to cooler mornings, changing leaves and that unmistakable feeling that a new season is here.

Then, almost overnight, it feels like fall is already packing its bags.

I’ve been scheduling freelance fall photo sessions, and looking at the calendar made me realize just how little time we have. There are only so many weekends to enjoy the colours, take a walk through the leaves or squeeze in one more outdoor activity before winter arrives.

As a photographer, I love this time of year. The warm colours, softer light and crisp air make for some of my favourite photos. It’s also a reminder of how quickly the seasons change.

And in Lloydminster, we all know winter doesn’t exactly need an invitation. So I’m going to stop worrying about how quickly fall is disappearing and just enjoy it while it’s here. I’ll take the long way home, soak up the colours and enjoy every photo session I can fit in.

Maybe that’s the lesson of fall: some of the best things are the ones we wish would last just a little longer.
