The Government of Saskatchewan has launched a public consultation on The Saskatchewan Farm Security Act, opening a survey for producers and residents to weigh in on the legislation that governs farmland ownership and foreclosure protections across the province.

The online survey was released Oct. 13 and will remain open until Nov. 30, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

What the survey covers

The ministry says the survey will take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and all responses are confidential.

Questions focus on three main areas: farmland ownership, home quarter protection and farm foreclosure protections, the province said.

“Our government wants to hear from Saskatchewan producers and residents about The Saskatchewan Farm Security Act,” Agriculture Minister David Marit said in a release.

“Farm land is one of Saskatchewan’s most valuable assets, and we want to ensure the legislative framework governing its ownership and protection continues to meet the needs of Saskatchewan people,” Marit said.

Review builds on recent ownership rule changes

The consultation follows a period of active change to Saskatchewan’s farmland rules. The province launched new farmland ownership rules earlier this year, after it amended farmland ownership rules in the fall of 2025.

The Saskatchewan Farm Security Act sets the legislative framework for who can own agricultural land in the province and what protections exist for producers facing foreclosure, including rules around a farm’s home quarter.

The government says survey data collected through the consultation will be used to help determine whether changes to the Act are needed and to shape any amendments going forward.

Local stake in the outcome

Producers in the County of Vermilion River and across the Lloydminster-area farm belt operate under Alberta’s separate land ownership framework, but many Saskatchewan-side growers and landowners near the border are directly subject to the Act under review.

The consultation gives area farmers a direct avenue to flag concerns before any legislative changes are drafted, similar to how regional residents were encouraged to weigh in on the County of Vermilion River’s own survey push earlier this year.

How to take part

The survey is available at saskatchewan.ca/farmland-consultation and closes Nov. 30.
