It was a weekend of contrasts for the Lakeland College Rustlers women’s basketball team.
Facing the early-season grind of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), the Rustlers experienced both the harsh sting of a slow start and the sweet taste of a resilient bounce-back.

When the weekend opened on Oct. 30, the Rustlers ran into a determined squad in the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
The visiting team seized control early, exploiting a 24-14 opening quarter to build a commanding 39-24 cushion by halftime. Despite a fierce, determined comeback in the final frame where Lakeland outscored their opponents 20-12, the early deficit proved too steep to overcome in a 72-60 decision.

Even in the loss, the Rustlers showcased grit across the stat sheet. Jenna Rinsky paced the offense with 17 points and three steals, while Declynn Wood put together a stellar all-around performance featuring 12 points, nine rebounds, and six steals. Down in the paint, Alex McLaren anchored the glass with a game-high 12 boards to go with her 10 points and three steals.
Rather than letting the setback linger, Lakeland turned the page in dramatic fashion just 24 hours later. Returning to their home floor on Oct. 31, the Rustlers rolled past the Olds College Broncos 64-47 to complete a successful weekend split.
This time, it was Lakeland who dictated the tempo. After a tightly contested first half that ended with a narrow 33-32 edge, the Rustlers broke the game wide open in the final two quarters, outscoring the Broncos 31-15 down the stretch. Defensive pressure proved to be the catalyst; Lakeland forced Olds College into 27 turnovers, ruthlessly converting them into transition opportunities.
The offensive workload was shared in the victory, with Declynn Wood and Chelsea Neilson each pouring in 14 points. Wood continued her high-energy weekend with six rebounds, five steals, and two assists, while Neilson provided a massive spark off the bench by sinking four three-pointers and grabbing three steals. Rinsky chipped in another steady 10 points and five rebounds, and McLaren once again controlled the interior with 11 boards.
