Valerie Evelyn Marshall was born on October 18, 1965, in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. She passed away peacefully in the early morning on Thursday, July 30, 2026, with her daughter Kassidey by her side. She leaves behind countless cherished memories that will be treasured forever by all who knew and loved her. Valerie had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome. One of the ways she most often expressed her love was through cooking, and nothing brought her more joy than gathering family and friends around the table. Her favorite meal to prepare was a traditional roast beef dinner, and her homemade soups were lovingly made and fondly remembered by everyone fortunate enough to enjoy them. She had an eye for beauty and found happiness in the simple things that made life special. Valerie loved plants and flowers, enjoyed dressing up and could often be heard singing. Her warmth, creativity and appreciation for beauty brightened the lives of those around her. She loved to laugh and her laughter was contagious. From childhood throughout her life, Valerie had a deep love for animals. She cherished many special companions, including a calf named Brindle, a duck named Gonzo and a Shetland pony named Salute. She often shared memories of growing up in the country—memories she held close throughout her life. She took great pride in where she came from and in her family name and heritage. Her gentle heart and compassion for animals reflected the kindness she carried within her. She is remembered by: her children, Sommer Bye (Matthew) and Kassidey Smale (Rick); mother, Evelyn Marshall; and siblings, Jacqueline Andre, Marlin Marshall, Ronda Shumyla, Cameron Marshall, Sylvia Marshall and Gina Foy. Her memory and spirit will live on through her daughters and in the lives of her granddaughters, Marlo and Blake. Dana Meeres was especially important to Valerie. His friendship, kindness and devoted care were a tremendous source of comfort throughout her journey, and she truly treasured the bond they shared. One of their most cherished recent memories was a trip to Cold Lake, where she found peace by the water, enjoyed the beauty of nature, and created lasting memories with someone she cared for deeply. She will also be dearly missed by her extended family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Valerie will be remembered for her hardworking nature, her generous heart, her loving spirit, her wonderful home-cooked meals, and the joy she found in caring for others. Though she is no longer with us, her love, kindness and the beautiful memories she created will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her. “Those we love don’t go away. They are always near our hearts every day, unseen, unheard.” In lieu of flowers, for those wishing to honor Valerie are invited to plant a tree or flowers in her memory. A Memorial Service for Valerie will be held at a later date. McCaw Funeral Service Ltd., of Lloydminster, Alberta administered the funeral arrangements.
