Members of the Lloydminster Fire Department and Lloydminster RCMP were on scene at a vehicle fire this evening beneath the pedway between the Servus Sports Centre and Best Western Plus. Taylor Weaver Meridian Source.
A wiring issue in a late-model pickup truck caused evacuations at the Servus Sports Centre and Best Western Plus this evening, no one was injured.
“The Lloydminster Fire Department got a report of a vehicle fire under the pedway between the Best Western Plus and the Servus Sports Centre,” said Assistant Fire Chief, Bill Heesing.
As for the cause of the fire, Heesing explained the driver reported he was having mechanical issues with the vehicle and was working on it under the pedway when it caught fire.
Upon speaking with the driver, the Meridian Source confirmed a wiring issue was indeed the cause of the fire.
“The vehicle was on fire, there were visible flames and crews responded. We had our fire truck, and Tower 18 and Rescue 17 all responded due to the fact we had people in both the hotel and Servus Sports Centre.”
Aside from multiple Lloydminster Fire Department crews, area residents also saw a heavy police presence to ensure all occupants vacated both buildings.
“Both buildings were evacuated and alarms were ignited in both places. Both buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure just in case smoke was in the buildings,” said Heesing.
