The Town of Bonnyville has seen a population increase of nearly 5 per cent according to the most recent municipal census.
The Town of Bonnyville conducted a municipal census from May to July 2024. The goal being to update the population total and aide with planning of community services and programming. Also updating the census would ensuare the appropriate amount of funding for grants is received that are based on per capita numbers.
The census data received shows the town’s population has increased by 316 people bringing the total population of Bonnyville to 6,675. In 2021, according to Stats Canada, the population of Bonnyville was 6,359.
Coun. Brian McEvoy said having an updated population of Bonnyville is important.
“This is very important for us to have a true count of the population in Bonnyville as we have seen in the past the stats can numbers be rather skewed, where we lost 1k one year and gained it back next year,” he said.
Administration also cleared up during the question-and-answer period that approximately 99 per cent of the households were covered in this census.
For information, administration explained the shadow population of Bonnyville was a little over 300 but those numbers were not included in the census. The shadow population needs to be 10 per cent of the total population to be included in the census.
A shadow population is defined as people who spend extensive amounts of time in a municipality but declare their residence elsewhere.
Council voted to accept the new municipal census as information.
