Alberta’s government has announced a $5 million Alberta Industry Skills Grant pilot program to combat workforce shortages in critical sectors.
Additionally, the initiative will fund industry-led training in fields such as aviation, construction, aerospace, and technology.
“Alberta’s economy continues to grow,” said Matt Jones, minister of jobs, economy and trade. “With that growth comes the need for a skilled and adaptable workforce. This grant empowers industry partners to lead the way in equipping workers with skills they need for jobs that build Alberta’s future.”
The program is designed to fill gaps where a lack of skilled workers could stunt economic growth. BuildForce Canada projects Alberta’s construction industry will require 22,000 additional workers by 2033. Similarly, aviation and technology sectors face persistent vacancies that could hinder productivity.
“This grant supports Alberta workers in accessing training to thrive in high-demand fields,” said Quentin Huillery, chief operating officer at Ledcor. “The demand for skilled trades continues to increase. Ledcor fully supports this innovative program and looks forward to its results.”
Additionally, Alberta’s government is working directly with industry partners to identify skill gaps and develop targeted training solutions. Employers and associations can use grant funding to expand existing programs or offer new training opportunities.
Deborah Yedlin, CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, stressed the importance of investing in workforce development.
“This initiative will help businesses succeed while building a more resilient workforce,” she said. “It ensures Calgary and Alberta remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global economy.”
The grant prioritizes skills essential to Alberta’s future. Workers gain industry-recognized credentials, enabling long-term career growth. Meanwhile, employers benefit from a more skilled, adaptable workforce.
“This program ensures Alberta’s economy remains strong and competitive,” said Jones. “It’s a vital step forward in addressing critical workforce needs.”
Applications for the program are now open to Alberta-based employers and associations.
